On the second day of Christmas, the NICU gave to me: 2 blood transfusions and a micropreemie in an isolette.
Blood transfusions are pretty common in the NICU. Preemies can’t create all of the components of blood on their own, so they get anemic. The way to fix this is to give them transfusions. We were so freaked out when they told us we needed to sign the consent form for blood, because we had only heard of transfusions in the context of massive blood loss. Nope, turns out this is a pretty standard thing in the NICU. We were able to hold her while they transfused the blood, which was a chance to hold her for about two hours straight instead of just one. Little Miss Minion had two transfusions in the NICU, but most micro preemies have more than that.
